The Government of Telangana on Friday (September 26, 2025) appointed B. Shivadhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana. Mr. Shivadhar Reddy, a 1994 Indian Police Service officer, previously served as the Director General of Police, Intelligence, Telangana.As per an official order issued by Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao on Friday, he has been transferred and posted as the Director General of Police (Coordination) and is also placed in “full additional charge” of the post of Director General of Police (Head of Police Force) for Telangana, replacing the retiring DGP, Jitender.A 1994 Indian Police Service officer B. Short practice as advocateBorn in Hyderabad and a native of Tool-e-Kalan (Peddatundla) village in Ibrahimpatnam Mandal, Rangareddy district, he completed his education in Hyderabad and graduated in law from Osmania University. After a short practice as an advocate, he joined the Indian Police Service in 1994 and was allotted the Andhra Pradesh cadre. His cadre was reassigned to Telangana after bifurcation in 2014.He began his career as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli sub-divisions of Visakhapatnam district between 1996 and 1998. Later, as Additional SP from 1998 to 2000, he worked with the Greyhounds and then in Bellampalli, Adilabad district.Mr. Shivadhar Reddy subsequently served as Superintendent of Police in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore and Guntur districts. In Hyderabad, he held posts including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in 2004 and DCP South Zone between 2007 and 2008. He also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.First Intelligence chief of TelanganaHis senior postings included DIG, Chief of the Special Intelligence Branch; Additional Director and later Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau; and Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam. In 2014, he became the first Chief of Intelligence in Telangana and was reinstated to the post in 2023. He was promoted to the rank of Director General in 2024.He has received several honours, including the Police Medal for Gallantry, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, and the United Nations Peace Medal.Sensitive assignmentsDuring his service, Mr. Shivadhar Reddy has handled several sensitive assignments. As SP of Nalgonda, he led operations to neutralise the violent activities of the banned CPI (ML) (PW), later CPI (Maoist). While posted as SP in Nellore and Guntur, he dealt with factional and social violence. In 2007, following the Mecca Masjid blasts and subsequent firing that killed 14 in Hyderabad, he was appointed DCP South Zone, where he oversaw law and order during a tense period and worked to restore normalcy.
