O
n Sunday, the UK formally recognised the state of Palestine. We have taken this historic step alongside key allies, to protect a two-state solution: the only path to security and a just and lasting peace for Palestinians and Israelis alike. We have taken it now because the dire situation in Gaza and the West Bank puts the two-state solution in profound jeopardy.
This will be my message at the UN general assembly, as I affirm the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and underline the imperative of ending this war and charting a framework for peace.
For decades, the two-state solution has commanded global support, but it now risks being fatally undermined by continued bloodshed and man-made famine, terrorism and hostage taking, settlement expansion and settler violence.
Hamas, a despicable terrorist organisation, continues to hold hostages in atrocious conditions, prolonging the unbearable anguish of the families fighting tirelessly for their release.
