These days their life consists of camping in woodland between two industrial estates, wearing robes made from recycled curtains and accepting gifts to sustain their unusual existence.
However, as these pictures show, there was a time when the self-styled King Atehene and Queen Nandi enjoyed a very different lifestyle, attending corporate events and rubbing shoulders with celebrities.
The married couple, whose real names are Kofi Offeh and Jean Gasho, have made headlines around the world after they took up residence in woodland in Jedburgh, claiming themselves to be the true rulers of Scotland.
Members of the self-proclaimed ‘Kingdom of Kubala,’ they live with their ‘handmaiden’ – an American by the name of Kaura Taylor, 21. Since taking up with the couple, Ms Taylor, who was reported missing by her family in Texas, now calls herself Asnat.
During their interactions with the media and other visitors to their camp, the trio have often behaved theatrically, with Mr Offeh rolling his eyes back and chewing on a twig while being attended to by his female companions.
