A pack of pint-sized pooches has swapped chew toys for turf to run the first ever dachshund derby at Chester Racecourse - competing for a bottle of bubbly.

The seven competitors brought a canine touch to the city's iconic horseracing venue as they took to the track on Saturday.

The determined hounds, donning numbered shirts for the occasion, prevailed amid wind and rain to cross the finish line of the 50-metre course.

But it was Nellie, a five-year-old standard, wire-haired dachshund, who earned the title of top dog and won, bagging pretzel dog treats and a toy champagne bottle.

Her owner and trainer Melanie Ashley, from Chester, meanwhile, got the real deal, taking home some fizz for her pet's winning performance.
