Twelve students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) were briefly detained on Friday evening for holding a protest march without prior approval, refusing to disperse, and getting into a tussle with a policewoman, a senior police officer said.
“They [students] did not have prior permission to take out the march. When we requested them to turn back, they refused to comply and even got into a tussle with a woman officer. That was when we detained 12 students as a preventive measure,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemant Tiwari told The Hindu.
The students were detained at 7 p.m. and released by 8 p.m., he added.
Meanwhile, the All India Students’ Union (AISA) issued a statement that at 6.20 p.m., students of JMI had gathered on campus to commemorate 17 years of the Batla House encounter.
AISA alleged that at least 20 students, including women, were picked up by the police. “The protesting students, along with those witnessing the protest, were dragged to gate no. 7,” said the student outfit.
