A 55-year-old tea stall vendor was killed after he was run over by a Delhi Police PCR vehicle in the Capital’s Gole market on Thursday morning, an officer said. Eye witnesses have alleged the police personnel in the vehicle were under the influence of alcohol.
A senior officer said two policemen in the car have been sent for medical tests. A complaint has been lodged under sections of the BNS dealing with rash and negligent driving, he said, adding that all possible angles are being investigated.
According to the police, the driver of the van said he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, which led to the accident.
Sources said the incident happened around 5 a.m. when the deceased, Gangaram Tiwari, was asleep in his tea stall. “The PCR van climbed onto the roadside ramp and ran over my father,” said the deceased’s son. “The officers were intoxicated. I got the stench of alcohol and there were empty liquor bottles,” he added. He said there were two male policemen and a woman in the car.
The deceased’s son also claimed that when the locals tried to stop the accused from fleeing the scene, one of the policemen pointed his pistol at them and threw away the mobile phone of a man who was recording the altercation.
