A seven day ‘jeep jatha’ will be organised across the Agency areas of Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district from September 22 to protest the alleged displacement of tribals by State governments due to ‘hydro power projects.’Announcing the ‘jeep jatha’ at a press conference in Paderu on Thursday, P. Appala Narasa, ASR district secretary of AP Girijana Sangham said that the jatha would be inaugurated by CPI(M) Central Committee member K. Lokanadham on September 22. He called upon the tribal people to make the ‘jeep jatha’, which would cover 400 km, a success. A public meeting by the ‘Aranya Garjana Sabha’ would be held on September 27 in which CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao would participate as chief guest.Mr. Appala Narasa said that the Constitution has provided special rights to tribal people on land and water resources in the forests. He alleged that the Central and State governments had brought out G.O. no. 51 in violation of the rights of tribals and added that the proposed hydro power projects would deprive the tribal people of their livelihood. He further alleged that the Central and State governments had allotted about 10,000 acres of forest and agricultural land in the Agency areas to corporate groups and private investors like Navayuga and Adani without holding the mandatory Tribal Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting and obtaining approval of the gram sabha.
