The Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers’ Protection Association has suggested that the task of removing hyacinth in the delta region should be entrusted to the Department of Agricultural Engineering.Commending the State government for allocating ₹ 18 crore to clear hyacinth from the irrigation drain channels and rivers in the delta region this ‘rabi’ season, association secretary Sundara Vimalanathan exhorted the State government to assign the task to Agricultural Engineering Department. This would not only ensure effective implementation of the project conceived by the Water Resources Department, but also help cut down the expenditure to a greater extent as the department’s machinery could be used for the work. The State government should consider involving the department in this scheme instead of executing the scheme by engaging private contractors of the Water Resources Department, he said.Mr. Vimalanathan said details such as the extent of work to be taken up under the scheme and the cost involved to execute each component should be made public through the media and the official websites of the departments concerned.
