Sir Keir Starmer is reeling today after his 'historic' trade deal with the US unravelled further with the shelving of an agreement to slash steel tariffs.
Little more than four months on from the Prime Minister boasting of his 'fantastic' deal with Donald Trump, it was revealed that punitive levies on British steel will remain.
The Government is understood to have paused its push to cut the tariffs, which stand at 25 per cent, to zero as was originally agreed earlier this year.
Whitehall sources said it was now clear the original plan for zero tariffs on UK steel would not be implemented, delivering a devastating blow to the beleaguered industry.
The so-called deal, covering cars and steel, was announced by Sir Keir in May in response to Mr Trump unveiling sweeping tariffs on imports to America.
