Congress councillors in the Thrissur Corporation council led by Leader of the Opposition Rajan J. Pallan on Monday protested during the council meeting, wearing masks, to condemn the police taking the Kerala Students Union (KSU) leaders to the court in handcuffs and with their faces covered.
Mr. Pallan also came down heavily on the Left Democratic Font (LDF)-led Corporation council and the Mayor alleging that they forcibly collected ₹400 each from Corporation officials and ₹200 each from sanitation workers for the Onam feast. Terming it “humiliating” and unacceptable, he said it was an insult to the Corporation that the Onam feast was held at the controversial Bini Tourist Home despite knowing that the Opposition councillors would boycott it. The councillors of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with a section of the staff, boycotted the feast. Those who attended were left scrambling for food, Mr. Pallan alleged.
Mr. Pallan also opposed the reported spending of ₹10 lakh from the Corporation funds for the Chief Minister’s participation at the inauguration of the AMRIT water efficient project in the Corporation courtyard. He demanded a vote on the agenda, which was later deferred.
