Residents have raised complaints over the delay in the construction of bridges across the city, and have demanded that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) expedite and complete the work before the Northeast monsoon.
T. Nagar resident V.S. Jayaraman said the delay in completing the construction of a bridge on Usman Road, which was supposed to be ready last year, would affect monsoon preparedness in the neighbourhoods.
Residents who complained about civic issues, such as sewage overflow near the construction site were not sure if the problems would persist during the monsoon.
“In a bid to improve monsoonpreparedness, the bridge work should be expedited. Damaged sewer networks in the vicinity of such projects should be restored. Moreover, the road width has reduced because of the work, preventing residents from accessing bylanes,” he said.
B. Kannan, another resident, said the work should be expedited to allow stormwater to drain from the area to the canal in CIT Nagar. “The original alignment of the bridge, obtained under the RTI, was different. We are worried about the impact of the project on flooding. If the bridge is completed ahead of the Northeast monsoon, rain preparedness can be improved,” he said.
