A man was arrested today after four synagogues had a substance smeared on them and a liquid was thrown towards a school during a series of antisemitic incidents.

The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after seven Jewish premises in Barnet, North London, were targeted in separate incidents over recent weeks.

This afternoon, the force arrested a 37-year-old man in the Hendon area on suspicion of religiously motivated criminal damage in connection with the seven offences.

Police said he was taken into custody while enquiries continue amid an increased police presence in Barnet, which has London's largest Jewish community.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams from the Met said: 'This is a significant development in our investigation following substantial CCTV enquiries by officers.
