Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A naval cadet was shot while mistaking a security agent for an active shooter on Thursday caused in part by false online information.
The U.S. Naval Academy base in Annapolis was closed Friday as an investigation into the incident continues.
In a statement seen by CNN from an academy commandant, a midshipman using a chat platform saw discussion that erroneously warned of an active gunman on the base, and that the misinformation claimed the shooter was dressed as a law enforcement officer.
The base was locked down in response to the online chatter.
That student then confronted base security and hit a legitimate agent in the head with his parade rifle. He was then shot in the arm by Naval Security Forces.
