At least one person has been hospitalized and several other victims are being assessed after a Naval Academy student accidentally shot someone, causing the Maryland campus to go into lockdown.

Initially, reports suggested an armed former Naval Academy student opened fire on the Maryland campus near the Bancroft Hall dormitories.

However, it has since come out that the shooting was an accident, with the expelled former student merely having sent out threats on social media. The shooter used an IP address that made it appear he was on campus.

Amid the chaos, a student sheltering in place mistakenly saw a law enforcement officer as a threat and physically struck him with a training rifle, which caused the officer to shoot back, NBC News reported.that'
