Britain's new interim ambassador to the US has been revealed as a career diplomat who suffered tragedy when his wife nearly died from a brain haemorrhage.

James Roscoe - who has worked for Queen Elizabeth II, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown - took over immediately today as the UK's representative in Washington.

It comes after Lord Mandelson was sacked as ambassador following emails that revealed the depth of his relationship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr Roscoe, 49, will oversee Donald Trump's second state visit to the UK next Wednesday with only one week to go until the US President arrives in Windsor.

He now lives in Washington with his 43-year-old wife Clemency Burton-Hill - who is a BBC presenter, musician and actress - and their two young sons Tomos and Joe.
