Since the DMK government is committed to social justice, we have appealed to the government to take steps to enact a law against caste killing, said former MP Brinda Karat after visiting the family of Kavin Selvaganesh, at Arumugamangalam in Thoothukudi district on Thursday.Speaking to mediapersons, after the visit, Ms. Karat said that it will remain a blot on India’s conscience that a brilliant young boy was brutally murdered, just because Kavin and his friend crossed the purported caste boundary. She added that the reality of today’s India was that caste hatred was being fanned in the name of custom and traditions and Kavin was the victim of caste politics. Highlighting the assurance made by DMK government to the family which was yet to be implemented, she stressed that no compensation can be seen as enough for this murder driven by caste hatred.Ms. Karat sought the arrest of all individuals involved in the crime. She added that so far only three people were arrested in relation to Kavin’s murder. “But we don’t believe that only three people were involved in the crime. There are numerous people who are involved in these crimes,” she said.Emphasising that the law against caste killing should be enacted at the national-level, she noted, “the BJP government is protecting those who are perpetrating caste crimes. That is why from 2014 to 2025, a draft law against these sort of crimes that we had prepared has been lying idle in the law ministry. The Law Commission and National Commission of Women have also given recommendations. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government was refusing to bring a law against this.”Since such crimes were also happening in Tamil Nadu, we have appealed the DMK government to take steps to enact a law against caste killing and set an example by bringing such a law at least for this State, Ms. Karat added.CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam and other members of the party were present. Published - September 11, 2025 06:30 pm IST
