The UK’s first ‘super-university’ will be created as Kent staves off financial collapse by merging with Greenwich.
The two universities, which have both announced cuts to courses and staff this year, said the move would help them ‘weather economic challenges’.
The merger will combine 50,000 students, with just one vice chancellor and management team – allowing pooling of resources.
The new collaboration will be called the ‘London and South East University Group’ but the two universities will still retain their old names and local presences.
Today, Jo Grady, general secretary of the University and College Union (UCU), claimed the merger is because Kent was ‘on the brink of insolvency’.
