The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) directed Priya Kapur, wife of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, to disclose details of all his movable and immovable assets, after Mr. Kapur’s two children with his former wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, challenged the validity of a will purportedly leaving all his personal assets to Ms. Priya.Justice Jyoti Singh passed the direction on a plaint filed by Mr. Kapur’s two children with Ms. Karisma Kapoor - Samaira Kapur, 20, and Kiaan Raj Kapur, 15 - seeking their share in the estate of their late father.During the hearing, senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for Ms. Priya, argued that the two children had already received a beneficial interest in assets valued at over ₹1,900 crore through the family trust. On the judge’s query as to whether the will was registered, Mr. Nayar submitted that although the will was not registered, it was not “invalid”.“It’s not registered. There is a judgment which says an unregistered [will] does not take the validity away. When I set up the will, my lady [judge] will be entitled to examine if it is suspicious in nature. All this crying and weeping that is going on, just six days before the suit, the plaintiffs received ₹1,900 crore from the trust. What more do they want?” he asked. The court issued notice to Ms. Priya and posted the matter for October 9.“For the moment I am only going to register it [the plaint] and ask you to file replies. Along with replies, defendant 1 [Priya] will file a list of all movable and immovable assets known to defendant 1. Assets to be declared as of June 12,” the judge said.Mr. Sunjay’s mother, Ms. Rani Kapur, has also challenged the will, saying she was left with nothing.“I have written at least 15 emails asking about the will, what are the documents? Not a word has been shared. I have been told that my emails have been compromised. There is something incredibly unholy. ₹10,000 crore worth of assets should have been mine,” the 80-year-old’s counsel, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, argued.Meanwhile, Ms. Priya’s counsel referred to the past litigation between Ms. Karisma and Mr. Sunjay, which ended in a Supreme Court-monitored divorce settlement.“There were litigations after litigation, it ultimately culminated in [a] bitter divorce process which ended in SC. Please have some sympathy for the soul of the deceased. I [Priya] have a six-year-old child. I am a widow. I am his last wife. You [Karisma] were nowhere to be seen for the last 15 years. It’s not as if these people are left on the streets,” the counsel said.Ms. Karisma Kapoor and Mr. Sunjay Kapur were married in September 2003 and divorced in June 2016. Two children were born during the marriage. Mr. Sunjay later married Ms. Priya in April 2017, and they had one child together.Samaira and Kiaan, represented by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, have questioned the authenticity of the will. They submitted that the purported document “is not a legal and valid document, is forged and fabricated and in any event surrounded by suspicious circumstances.”Their petition has sought directions to restrain Ms. Priya from acting on the contested will, thereby denying them inheritance. They argued that as Class I legal heirs under Indian succession laws, they are entitled to their respective shares in their father’s estate. Published - September 10, 2025 01:15 pm IST
