Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A freight train crashed into a double-decker bus in Mexico on Monday morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring at least 41, the nation's Civil Protection agency said.

The train slammed into the bus on the Atlacomulco-Maravatío federal highway in Atlacomulco, about 75 miles northwest of Mexico City, the agency said. Initially, the death toll was reported as eight and 45 hurt.

"This accident occurred after a passenger bus attempted to overtake a train," Canadian Pacific Kansas City of Mexico, the operator of the train, said in a news release in Spanish.

"CPKC of Mexico calls on the public, drivers, and conductors to respect the posted signs and comply with the stop order at railroad crossings to avoid these unfortunate situations."

Security video, obtained by CNN and Milenio, shows the train crashing into the bus that was beginning to cross the tracks amid slow-moving traffic.
