Agroup of Egyptian and Somali people who were among hundreds of migrants to arrive on the Italian island of Lampedusa overnight said Monday that the Libyan authorities fired on them during their crossing from North Africa.
"About 30 minutes after we had left Zahra, maybe a little more, suddenly a large Libyan boat approached and someone opened fire on us," said one of the migrants that was part of group of 21.
There were 1,531 people at Lampedusa's migrant hotspot on Monday after a wave of arrivals continued with 685 people landing in 11 different vessels early in the day and late on Sunday.
