TASS-FACTBOX. On September 8, 2025 an online summit of the BRICS interstate association is scheduled to take place.
The meeting is organized by the alliance's rotating chair Brazil, at the initiative of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The emergency summit will focus on US trade policy. Lula da Silva wants the BRICS members to formulate a common strategy for responding to the tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration.
TASS editors have prepared a special feature on the history of BRICS and its evolution.
The organization’s co-founders were Brazil, Russia, India and China. The acronym BRIC was derived from the names of the association’s member countries in English. After South Africa joined them in 2011, the association was renamed to BRICS.
