T8 signal will remain in force at least until 11am on Monday, forecaster says

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No 8 typhoon signal at 9.20pm on Sunday, with tropical cyclone Tapah expected to make landfall over western Guangdong the following morning.

Tapah – the Malay word for a type of giant freshwater catfish – is expected to skirt within 200km southwest of Hong Kong around sunrise on Monday and the No 8 signal will remain in force at least until 11am. The Observatory issued the No 3 signal in the early hours of Sunday.

The Observatory has said that unless Tapah moves closer to the Pearl River Delta or intensifies markedly, there is less chance of a higher typhoon signal.

All day school classes on Monday are cancelled.
