Observatory expects the storm to pass within 200km of Hong Kong on Monday morning as the city prepares for strong winds and rainfall

Hong Kong will issue a No 8 typhoon warning signal between 9pm and midnight on Sunday, as Tropical Cyclone Tapah approaches closest to the city the next morning, the Observatory said.

The storm is expected to pass within 200km (124 miles) southwest of the city on Monday morning, the forecaster added.

“In the past few hours, Tapah continued to track north-northwestwards,” the Observatory said. “Its outer bands of thundery showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong. With Tapah edging closer, local winds will strengthen progressively.”

At 3pm, the storm was estimated to be approximately 340km south of Hong Kong and was forecast to move north-northwest at about 18km/h (11mph).
