or many years I have been selling items from my wardrobe via a luxury resale business called Hardly Ever Worn It, or Hewi. Last December I was having some financial difficulties so I listed a pair of diamond earrings for £4,250. I found a buyer and agreed a 10 per cent discount.
They wanted them before Christmas, but I was concerned about sending them in the post in case they were lost. So on December 23, I personally delivered them to Hewi’s office near Bond Street in London and a member of staff reassured me that the transaction would proceed smoothly.
Then in January Hewi told me that the buyer had concerns about the fastening. They said the earrings were difficult to open and that they had been sent back to Hewi so they could be checked by one of its jewellers. I said there was nothing wrong with the earrings and the clasp was designed to be quite firm.
Hewi said the jeweller would probably take a “swift look”, and then would be able to send them back to the buyer so that I could be paid. Despite my many follow-ups by phone, email and WhatsApp, it has not sent my money.
