An eight-year-old boy suffered a severe injury while snorkeling off the Florida coast on Labor Day, but miraculously survived thanks to the brave actions of his older sister.
Richard Burrows was enjoying the Key Largo waters near John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park when a blacktip reef shark bit him, the Miami Herald reported.
Richard was rushed to a local hospital after sustaining a significant injury to his knee. His family issued a statement that read: 'The initial injury inflicted on Richard was significant, but due to the help of a number of people, it was contained'.
'Richard’s 10-year-old sister, Rose, was instrumental in her brother’s rescue and both of her parents are immensely proud of the strength of character and composure she demonstrated under pressure'.
Rose and Richard were snorkeling with their father, David, 48, when the horrifying attack occurred.
