The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has criticised the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for violating environmental regulations during the recent Vinayaka idol immersion, specifically for the dumping of waste on Pattinapakkam beach.
The Bench, comprising Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Prakash Gargava, said the GCC failed to remove the debris from the beach by August 29, as ordered by the Tamil Nadu Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNCZMA). It pointed out that the dumping of debris on the ecologically sensitive Pattinapakkam beach was a clear violation of environmental protection laws.
