Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Monday informed National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that his policy document on restricting protests is invalid, as it contravenes the principles established when he took office and exceeds his authority as the minister in charge of the police.
“Publishing the policy document in its current form, without conducting a proper consultation with the police commissioner and the Attorney General, would constitute a blatant violation of the principles document, which, as stated in the document itself and as was also conveyed to the Supreme Court, has been binding upon you since its formulation,” the Attorney General noted. “All this, without detracting from other violations that have occurred to date.”
A joint team, including representatives from the Ministry of Justice and from Ben-Gvir’s circle, is currently convening to discuss the implementation of the principles agreement that the minister accepted upon his recent entry into office, within police procedures and orders.
Ben-Gvir said in response that the document will go into effect within 24 hours. "The posit that my authority on the matter is suspended is utterly illegal," the minister wrote.
