A prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will be released from prison in three weeks, local authorities have confirmed.

Christian Brückner, who is serving a sentence in northern Germany for a rape conviction will be released by September 17, the lead German prosecutor investigating Madeleine's disappearance told the BBC.

Brückner has never been charged with a crime relating to the three-year-old's disappearance and denies any involvement.

However, German prosecutors have said there is evidence suggesting he may have been in the area when she vanished from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on 3 May 2007.

Lead prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said that while there is not enough evidence to formally charge Brückner in relation to the case, their efforts would continue.
