German prosecutors have requested an ankle bracelet for prime Madeleine McCann suspect and convicted rapist Christian Brueckner as they brace for his possible release in just a matter of weeks.

Brueckner, the key suspect in the 2007 disappearance of the 3-year-old Brit, is serving a seven-year sentence in Oldenburg Prison for multiple charges including the rape of a 72-year-old US women in Portugal.

But the 48-year-old German national, who was set to be kept behind bars until the end of January 2026, could now be released as early as September 17.

He owed €1,446 (£1,246) for a fine from a previous set of convictions, including a 2016 charge for drunkenness in traffic and forgery of documents, and in 2017 for assault.

The unpaid fine added 111 days to his sentence and would have kept him behind bars until next year.
