The school holidays haven’t yet finished and there’s still a few days to go of summer… but supermarkets are getting ready for Christmas.
Market analysts believe the chains want to cash in before consumers feel the pinch when Chancellor Rachel Reeves is predicted to announce more punitive measures in the budget.
Meanwhile, health campaigners say some retailers are attempting multibuy deals to make sales before a ban on promotions for high fat, salt and sugar products begins from October.
Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco are among stores which are stocking items more typically associated with the festive season, such as mince pies, stollen and even Christmas cake slices.
Morrisons has been criticised for health campaigners for deals including ‘Christmas offer’ multibuys on tubs of chocolates – ahead of restrictions on such discounts for high fat, sugar and salt products being implemented in October.
