The Matsya Shakthi project aimed at empowering the minority fishermen community in Thiruvananthapuram district has been launched. George Kurian, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Minority Affairs has launched the project implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) scheme.
The project aims to provide skill development and vocational training to both men and women from minority fisher families. Highlighting the scope of the project, the Minister said ‘Matsya Shakthi’ would benefit 700 fisher families in the district which has one of the largest populations of minority fisherfolk. The project is being carried out by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) at its Regional Center in Vizhinjam.
