Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin man who faked his own death and fled the country to be with a woman he met online to leave his wife and children has been sentenced to 89 days in jail.
Ryan Borgwardt, 45, pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer on Tuesday when he received his sentence.
Judge Mark T. Slate sentenced him to 89 days in prison, equal to the days he was missing. The prosecution and defense both recommended 45 days. He said he hoped the more severe punishment would deter anyone from thinking of doing a similar crime.
"For the defendant, and anyone else who is thinking about faking their death: If you persist in your deception, the longer you obstruct, the longer you are duplicitous instead of coming forward and admitting your mistake, the longer the penalty should be," Slate said
