Railway engineers got a scare after a young boy ran onto the tracks in front of their advancing train – and refused to stop.

Onlookers watched with horror as the youngster, with a shock of blonde hair, stood on the tracks at Athol Park crossing on the Isle of Man on Friday.

Playing what appeared to be a deadly game of chicken, he and two others stood on the tracks as the locomotive approached the end of the line at Port Erin.

But as two of the group – including a very young girl – ran to the side, the boy stood with his hands on his hips, seemingly determined to stare down the steam train.

He only chose to flee to the side at the last minute as the train drew closer, watched by his companions.
