Italian magistrates union ANM responded to Premier Giorgia Meloni's claim that some politicised magistrates were encroaching onto the political filed and trying to hamper the government by saying that the judiciary does not oppose politicians but simply applies the law.

"There is no intention on the part of the associated judiciary to engage in political opposition, nor to hinder the exercise of the prerogatives and powers vested in the executive branch," ANM Chair Cesare Parodi said in a statement, commenting on Meloni's remarks at the Rimini Meeting of the influential Catholic activist group Comunione e Liberazione in a keynote closing speech earlier in the day.

"The judiciary," he added, "necessarily take into account the general regulatory framework, as required by their prerogatives.

"Recent decisions by the European Court confirm the correctness of this approach, which duly respects roles."
