Fed firing: The commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, on Tuesday kept up the Trump administration’s attacks on Lisa Cook, who said that she would not step down from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve after President Trump said he would remove her. “The crook always says I’m not going anywhere, and why would anybody defend that?” Mr. Lutnick said on CNBC. Mr. Trump cited allegations of mortgage fraud, though Ms. Cook has not been charged with wrongdoing.
Epstein case: The top Republican on the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, seeking documents for the committee’s review of the federal government’s investigation. The congressman, James E. Comer of Kentucky, demanded financial records, Mr. Epstein’s will, video recordings from his residences and calendar entries detailing his meetings and dinners with famous people. Read more ›
Flag burning: President Trump signed an executive order on Monday directing the Justice Department to prosecute protesters who burn the American flag, “to the maximum extent permitted by the Constitution.” But as the directive itself acknowledges, the Supreme Court has ruled that flag burning is a form of political expression protected by the First Amendment.
