Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A Maryland man had an extra $20 in his pocket so he asked a store clerk to pick out a lottery ticket -- and won a $1 million top prize.

The Baltimore County man told Maryland Lottery officials he stopped at Hob's Carroll Motor Fuels on North Point Road in Sparrows Point and asked the clerk for a $20 scratch-off ticket.

"I jokingly told her to pick me a winner," the player recalled.

The clerk did as she was asked and handed over a $20 All About Cash ticket that turned out to be a $1 million top prize winner.

"At first, I thought I won $100. Then I thought it was for $1,000. It kept going and going," the winner said. "I called my wife and said, 'I just hit this sucker for one million bucks.'"
