After protests from the public and the elected representatives, and repeated delays by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and its contractors, tarring work has finally begun on the alternative stretch of NH 544 at Muringoor, between Thrissur and Ernakulam.
Around 9.30 p.m. on Friday, traffic towards Ernakulam was diverted through Aloor after blocking vehicles at Kodakara. The long-awaited tarring commenced at 10 p.m. Officials expect that once the work is completed, traffic flow will improve significantly, easing the congestion on the highway.
