Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Paraguay will host a World Rally Championship race for the first time later this month with the WRC Ueno Rally del Paraguay 2025, the 10th round of the FIA World Rally Championship.

The event, based in Encarnación -- the capital of Itapúa and Paraguay's third-largest city -- will bring together 48 crews to tackle 19 special stages on dirt and red-clay roads similar to the African routes in Kenya.

The route totals 592 miles, of which 207 will be timed, and is expected to draw more than 250,000 spectators, many traveling from neighboring Brazil and Argentina.

The 10th round of the season comes with the championship battle in full swing. Elfyn Evans leads with 176 points, followed closely by two-time champion Kalle Rovanperä with 173, while eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier is close behind with 163.

A win in Paraguay could reshape the standings heading into the final stretch of the year.
