But long waits at Dover for families seeking to travel to France and a crash on the M5 made the getaway hellish for some by Friday afternoon.
Delays are ongoing on the M5 south bound between junction 19 and 20 due to an accident, with drivers also facing problems on the M4 westbound between junction 19 and 20 due to a broken down vehicle.
Meanwhile by Friday afternoon ferry operator DFDS reported waits at Dover for families wishing to catch a ferry have reached 1 hour 15 at border controls and 40 minutes at check-in.
