Traffic chaos warnings are being issued as the Bank Holiday getaway begins, with 17 million people expected to take to the roads and 'do not travel' warnings issued ahead of rail strikes.

Motorists hitting the roads for the August bank holiday today should brace for long delays on major routes, with peak traffic hours expected between 10am and 7pm.

Drivers are being urged to set off early or be ready to spend longer in traffic if they plan to go away at the end of this week - the last long weekend before Christmas.

There will be around three million trips for leisure in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on the roads today alone, with more expected on Saturday.

Meanwhile rail firm CrossCountry has issued a 'do not travel' warning ahead of a planned rail strike tomorrow, meaning even more families will resort to car journeys on an already busy Bank Holiday weekend.
