Ex-federal prosecutor Elliot Williams ripped President Donald Trump for claiming he’d patrol Washington, D.C., with law enforcement Thursday night, weeks after federalizing its police force and sending National Guard troops there.“If the president truly cared about public safety in the District of Columbia, he could get out of the way of law enforcement and let them do their jobs,” declared Williams, a CNN legal analyst and a D.C. resident.Williams added that he can’t underscore enough just how much of an “undertaking” it is for the president to go anywhere or for senior government leaders to go for a “ride-along.”“Yes it’s cool, yes the guys like showing their work off to the higher-ups but everything has to be coordinated and choreographed to make it happen,” Williams said. “And it slows down their work and makes them less efficient as law enforcement officers. This isn’t about right or left or Donald Trump. It’s literally about getting in the way of cops, and I think it’s just a distraction for everybody.”His comments arrived just hours after Trump announced that he’d be “going out” at night with police and military, who have hit the streets of the nation’s capital in recent weeks despite violent crime hitting a 30-year low there.Later in the day, Trump — whose D.C. takeover has been criticized as a “stunt” — declared that his administration wasn’t “playing games” in a speech and handed out food to law enforcement with help from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for D.C.As of Thursday evening, it was unclear whether or not Trump would join law enforcement to patrol the city that night.Trump’s move follows a photo-op bid Tuesday by Vice President JD Vance, who — while joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and senior White House aide Stephen Miller — slithered through protesters at D.C.’s Union Station to praise National Guard troops for keeping the nation’s capital safe from “vagrants.”Close
