Israel is preparing to occupy Gaza. Its government is hoping that the expulsion of Gaza's residents and the destruction of Gaza City will bring the Palestinians to a breaking point, at which they will begin fleeing the Strip (disingenuously described by ministers as "voluntary departure.") In the imagination and prayers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition partners, this is what the "defeat of Hamas" – which they have been promising for two years — is supposed to look like.
