Though most view horse riding as a sport that involves perfectly appointed steeds, summery frocks and gentlemen in tweed, hardened riders know that the practicalities of life as an equestrian can sometimes be less glamorous. I’ve been riding almost as long as I’ve been walking and have found it common to meet people like me sporting riding attire with holes in the thigh, horsehair in the pockets and a subtle aroma of manure so deeply embedded into the fabric’s fibres that a million washes can’t save them. Growing up, I figured that if my horse was groomed to within an inch of his life and dressed to the nines, who cared what I looked like? He was always the beauty, and I was just the giddy slob who sat atop him.
Recently, I’ve changed my tune after realising how fabulous riding gear can be. For the first time it’s made me consider that trying to match my horse’s beauty might be worthwhile. There are glamorous Hugo Boss jodhpurs and thoughtfully designed Hermès jackets to wear after all.
