The year 1856 was a landmark in the annals of the Madras Town Police, when Act XIII of 1856, that is an Act regulating the Police of the Towns of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay and the several stations of the settlement of Prince of Wales Island, Singapore and Malaysia was enacted by the Governor – General of India. By this Act, the head of the Town Police was designed as the Commissioner of Police.
