In a design world where aesthetics often compete with ethics, a new generation of makers is proving you can have both. With its modern take on a classic, MahjongDao reimagines the game using recycled materials and laser-engraved tiles cut from a washable, leather-like kraft paper. The cellulose-based material is tough and tear-resistant, yet refined in finish. The mahjong set, which won both the Gold and Green design awards at the Hong Kong Smart Design Awards 2024, balances playability with a certain collector’s appeal.

Designed in Hong Kong, Kitdo’s MagniClip is a clever styling tool: a two-piece magnetic clip made from recyclable aluminium and finished with PVD (physical vapour deposition) – a low-waste coating process that uses no toxic chemicals and ensures long-lasting durability. Featherlight and versatile, the clip is designed to secure fabrics, add texture or structure layered looks with ease. Available in six finishes, it’s equal parts functional object and fashion experiment.
