The president of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, has condemned comments by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, calling the far-right minister and his partner National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir "extremists."
On Thursday, while unveiling Israel's latest settlement expansion plan, Smotrich said that the goal was to "bury the idea of a Palestinian state," which Lauder described as was "wholly unbecoming of a representative of the State of Israel."
Lauder added that the two far-right minister have repeatedly made statements that "massively damage Israel" and do not represent the majority of Jews worldwide who consider them extremists unfit for office.
Lauder also called on the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to clarify that these views are not shared by his government.
