More than 1,400 people were forced to flee their homes in north-west Spain yesterday as wildfires spread fast, driven by blazing temperatures and fierce winds.
Roughly 400 residents were relocated, while another 700 were evacuated from towns close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Las Medulas, once a Roman gold-mining location famed for its intense red terrain.
Arson is suspected in some instances, Castile and León's regional leader, Alfonso Manueco, said.
He wrote on X: 'We will be relentless with the perpetrators of these attacks against the lives and safety of people and our historical and natural heritage.' He also said the authorities will be 'merciless' with the arsonists.
Meanwhile, in Portugal, firefighters are struggling to contain a huge blaze they had initially declared contained. Eleven people have now been confirmed injured while many others have been treated for smoke inhalation.
