Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said Friday that the government was considering changing the rules for renewing the driving licences of elderly people after several recent fatal accidents, including two caused by over-80s driving in the wrong direction on motorways.
"We're thinking about how to possibly revise the driving license renewal exams after certain age limits, because of what's been happening in recent weeks," Salvini told Rtl 102.5 radio.
"A reflection based on numbers and data, not impressions, is needed.
"We have reformed the highway code, but not making U-turns on a motorway and not driving the wrong way on a motorway are not things I can impose with a new highway code.
"You always have to be on the ball when you drive, otherwise you'll cause disasters."
