Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the State government will soon launch a dedicated portal for indigenous communities, who feel vulnerable in sensitive areas, to apply for gun licences.

He said the arms licences would be granted after proper scrutiny through a multi-layered process.

In May, the State Cabinet headed by Mr. Sarma decided to grant arms licences to “original inhabitants or indigenous Indian citizens” living in border and remote areas. The government defended the decision as a step to make people in these vulnerable areas, far from police stations, feel safe.

“A dedicated portal is coming up where indigenous people, who perceive a threat to their lives and reside in sensitive areas, can apply for an arms license,” the Chief Minister said in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday (August 6, 2025).

People notified by the district administration or assessed as vulnerable by authorised security agencies will be eligible for acquiring an arms licence, he said.
