Severe flooding of the road stretch between Punjagutta and Ameerpet on Monday, when the city witnessed intense downpour, is suspected to have been due to collapse of vents underneath the road.
While the civic authorities are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the quick flooding, the finger is being pointed at dysfunctional drains across the road for the inundation.
Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency commissioner A.V.Ranganath, who was present at the location on Monday, said preliminary inspection revealed insufficiency of the drain capacity.
“It had rained very heavily in the upper regions such as Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. There were two box drains, each 20 feet wide, to carry the flood water, which got reduced to a single 15-foot drain at Srinivasa Nagar Colony in Ameerpet. We also suspect that the vents underneath the road towards the other side either collapsed or got jammed, which led to severe flooding of the road,” Mr. Ranganath explained.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities were not available for a comment on the status of the drain.
